Good to know at least one person saw/read the article written by my esteemed colleagues Jon and Steve :-)

My position on this, and it's one that Jon and I have long debated, is that it is not appropriate or effective to measure/reward those individuals who provide proposal support on the win, for the reasons Robin states.

But if that's the case, then surely rewarding these same individuals for 'moving the sale to the next stage' falls into the same area as a 'win' (You've merely defined the win as something different.)

To be effective and fiar, the measure and rewards for an individual providing support for a proposal have to be based on aspects within their control. These aspects are - articulation of the strategy and messages, quality of the content, compeltenss/compliance, planning/management (including on time delivery) and efficiency of the proposla operation.

If the proposla support team excels in one of these areas - for instacne, producing a very challenging response without the need for excess overtime, they should be rewarded for that. IF the proposla is of exceptional quality, above the norm, here too they should be rewarded.

There should be a reward associated with winning and the proposla support function should share in this. But it should be a secondary or teriary reward, not a primary measurement/reward.

Just my two sense (intention use of the word. :-)

Todd's one of my favorite songwriters as well, and I love his delivery and creativity, and I believe he must be a great editor.

When writing articles, or interviews for my magazine, I sometimes cut 2/3rds of what i have written originally, and it's difficult, but helps keep the message on point. My book writing friend David Teems has sent me e-mails with a line near the bottom that says "I'm sorry I didn't have time to make this shorter".

The bottom line IS "Be Specific". Thanks for posting this.

I follow your point about seeking clarification when the RFP seems to ask more or less the same question in different sections. I've come across this a lot with public sector bodies and the answer is often "yes, it is the same question, and no you can't answer it once as we divide up your response and send different sections to different departments, so you have to answer it wherever it appears".

These are the same bodies that demand your green credentials whilst asking you to provide 30% more paper that you really need to.

One day maybe they will change.

Interesting blog entries. I look forward to reading more.
